El hombre necesita creer y también
temer. Tras la erupción del Vesubio, el gran incendio de Londres, la llegada
del cometa Halley o el temido año 2000, Occidente atribuye hoy a los antiguos
mayas el vaticinio de un apocalipsis este 21 de diciembre.
Desde México, dos expertos en la civilización maya,
Eric Velásquez -historiador y epigrafista de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma
de México (UNAM)- y Alfredo Barrera -arqueólogo del Instituto Nacional de
Antropología e Historia (INAH)- rechazan contundentes que los mayas hayan
anticipado catástrofe alguna. Y afirman que hay tableros jeroglíficos mayas que
hacen referencia al año 4772 D.C.

Partamos de cero… Existen solo dos legados mayas, el ‘Monumento número 6’ de
Tortuguero, en Tabasco (México), y ‘El Escalón 5’ de la escalera jeroglífica de
La Corona, en Petén (Guatemala), que hacen referencia al controvertido 21 de
diciembre del 2012. ¿Qué expresan exactamente dichas inscripciones?
Erik Velásquez: Efectivamente, son los únicos dos sitios que
poseen inscripciones alusivas a esta fecha. Los mayas tenían distintos
calendarios (ver columna derecha). Uno de ellos utilizaba un sistema para
computar el tiempo que va desde las profundidades del tiempo pasado hasta el
futuro. No tiene principio ni tendrá fin. Sin embargo, definieron al año 3114
A.C. como la referencia del inicio del ordenamiento vigente del mundo, algo así
como el punto de partida de nuestra creación presente.
Este calendario, que ahora es conocido como ‘cuenta
larga’, segmenta el paso del tiempo en diversas referencias, una de ellas,
los baktun. Este 21 de diciembre se termina elbaktun número
13. Se celebra pues un aniversario más de la creación, pero solo eso. La
inscripción no dice absolutamente nada con respecto a una destrucción o
creación. Es un simple paso hacia el baktun número 14.
Alfredo Barrera. Esta
‘cuenta larga’ es una definición que es producto del trabajo de expertos como
J.T. Goodman, Juan Martínez Hernández y Sidney Thompson, entre otros. Y en ese
calendario se registraban sucesos importantes para los gobernantes, como
ascensos al trono, alianzas matrimoniales, y también se relacionaban hechos
registrados en los otros dos calendarios existentes (sagrado y
ordinario).

El mundo termina el 21 de diciembre
de 2012, si se quiere creer en las interpretaciones seudocientíficas del
calendario maya. Expertos esotéricos, científicos y sacerdotes mayas no comparten
esas afirmaciones. No obstante, hay gente en Suiza que ha comprado reservas
alimenticias, por si acaso… [...]

¿Existe algún otro registro, fecha o alusión hecha por los mayas sobre un
potencial “fin de la humanidad” que hubiese generado confusión o incertidumbre?
EV: Los
mayas consideraban que las cosas se desordenaban algunas veces en el universo y
entonces era tarea de los dioses o de los gobernantes, reordenarlo todo. Pero
la idea del fin de los tiempos jamás existió para ellos.
Son textos escritos a partir del siglo XVI, con
caracteres romanos o latinos, los que comenzaron a hablar de que los mayas
anticipaban un diluvio de fuego que pondría fin a la civilización presente,
pero es muy importante destacar dos cosas: esta información jamás apareció en
ningún texto prehispánico y tampoco existe ninguna fecha al respecto. Uno de
los documentos que contiene esas alusiones es, por ejemplo, la ‘Apologética
Historia Sumaria’ de Fray Bartolomé de las Casas.

¿Cómo y cuándo se desvirtúan pues las inscripciones mayas del 21.12.12? El
punto de partida fue aquel libro ‘México místico: la llegada de la sexta era
dela conciencia” de Frank Waters que introdujo en los 70’s el concepto de la
profecía maya del fin del mundo…
E.V.: Frank Waters, escritor estadounidense New
Age, supo de la inscripción del Tortuguero e hizo una analogía con la
idea de los mexicas sobre los Cinco Soles Cosmogónicos. Mezcló de forma poco
académica y comenzó a hablar del fin del mundo.
A.B.: Estamos ante una
interpretación completamente errónea, novelesca y fuera del estudio científico
del legado de los mayas. No existe un solo estudioso mayista que haya hablado
de profecías de este tipo. Sin embargo, los mitos crecen, surgen películas,
libros, comentarios en Internet y de pronto estamos frente a un fenómeno
mediático. Pero insisto, no existe ni una sola evidencia seria de que los mayas
hayan pronosticado una catástrofe.

¿Es nuestra herencia judeo-cristiana, más proclive al castigo y a los puntos finales,
la que explica pues una profecía que jamás existió?
EV: El pensamiento de los mayas no es apocalíptico como
el nuestro. La idea del fin del mundo es muy importante para la cultura
occidental, pero completamente ajena y desconocida para ellos. Estamos
extrapolando a los mayas antiguos nuestros propios miedos e ideas.
La gente tiene necesidad de creer en algo, y eso
nos conduce a múltiples debates. Pero en Occidente, el fin del mundo es un
negocio muy redituable. Siempre hay quien inventado fechas apocalípticas en el
pasado y seguirá sucediendo en el futuro.
DE ZÚRICH A ZACULEU
Estudios de alta precisión arrojan
nueva luz sobre las drásticas transformaciones climáticas vividas por la civilización
maya. Expertos suizos descartan que el fin del mundo esté cerca y afirman que
nuestro calendario no está bien alineado con el maya. [...]

Si los mayas contemplaban un baktun 14, hablemos de él. ¿Qué testimonios nos
dejaron sobre eventos posteriores al 21.12.12?
AB:
En la Estela número 1 de Cobá, en Quintana Roo (México), existen al menos 20
alusiones posteriores al baktun número 13. Es claro que
los mayas no tenían prevista ninguna catástrofe en 2012.
Y hay más, en Palenque, Chiapas (México), el panel
oeste de los tableros jeroglíficos del Templo de las Inscripciones contiene un
registro que hace referencia a una fecha precisa y distante, el 15 de octubre
del 4772 D.C., aunque no hace ninguna profecía concreta para este día, para los
mayas, el mundo iría mucho más allá del presente año.

Los mayas fueron médicos, matemáticos y astrónomos, entre otras cosas. La
conquista ‘eclipsó’ sus manifestaciones, pero en el presente se les ha
convertido en sabios, casi en gurúes. ¿Cómo evaluarlos en su justa dimensión?
¿Qué nos aportan en el siglo XXI?
EV: Los
hallazgos y desarrollo de la cultura maya se menospreció tras la conquista.
Ahora se les idealiza y se les considera una suerte de civilización superior.
Para entender a los mayas hay que encontrar el equilibrio. Tenían las mismas
capacidades y limitaciones que nosotros. Vivían preocupados por su entorno
inmediato, por las condiciones adversas de una selva lluviosa, y por evitar que
la mitad de sus niños murieran. Su esperanza de vida era de solo 35 años. Luchaban
con sequías y huracanes. A nosotros, en Occidente, nos educan para vivir
y consumir. Ellos, en contrapartida, estaban familiarizados con la muerte
y la aceptaban sin conflicto, quizás esto último es algo que podríamos
aprenderles. Y también su capacidad de adaptación. En el presente existen más 5
millones de mayas, hombres y mujeres de hoy, que viven en su territorio, o que
han migrado a otros países, que hablan inglés u otros idiomas, pero que han
sido capaces de conservar la riqueza de su lengua y sobre todo, de su
particular cosmovisión.

Los calendarios mayas
Los mayas desarrollaron tres tipos de
calendario:
TZOLKIN (sagrado). Contaba
con 260 días distribuidos 13 meses de 20 días. Era el más importante
porque reflejaba ceremonias religiosas y ciclos de lluvia, caza y pesca. El 20
era un número sagrado para los mayas –base de su sistema numérico- y el 13
reflejaba el número de dioses y también el número de demonios en los que
creían.
HAAB (ordinario). Un calendario
solar que consideraba 365 días repartidos en 18 meses de 20 días, a los
que se sumaban 5 días al final del año que consideraban “sin nombre”
y a los que se atribuían desgracias. En estos días celebraban el año
nuevo, se realizaban ofrendas y se evitaban el esfuerzo físico para alejar los
infortunios.
LA CUENTA LARGA. Es un calendario
parecido al cristiano en donde los mayas decidieron reflejar el día de la
creación del mundo actual –que corresponde al 13 de agosto del 3114 A.C.
del calendario gregoriano. En esta cuenta larga existen diversas
referencias: kin (un día), winnal (20 días, o mes maya), tun (360 días o
18 winnal), katun (7.200 días o 20 tun) y baktun (144.000 días o 20 katun).
El 21 de diciembre del 2012
corresponde al último día del baktun número 13 de los mayas.
¿Quiénes eran los mayas?
La civilización maya se desarrolló en
Mesoamérica, región que hoy comprende el sureste
de México, Guatemala, Belice, Honduras y El Salvador. Hay distintas
teorías sobre su punto de partida, pero la mayoría de los estudiosos lo
cifra alrededor del año 1000 A.C. y considera que su declive tuvo lugar
hacia el año 1600 DC con la conquista de las últimas ciudades mayas.
Los mayas desarrollaron 40 lenguas,
fueron campesinos y comerciantes, pero también fueron matemáticos,
médicos y astrónomos. Muchos expertos afirman hoy que pese a su
debilitamiento, no puede hablarse de extinción porque aún existen hoy
más de 5 millones de mayas que conservan su cosmovisión ancestral y
dialectos.
Su principal legado arquitectónico
incluye ciudades como Nakbé, El Mirador, Palenque, Petén, Tikal o Quiriguá,
estas dos últimas son consideradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por parte de la
UNESCO.
