Economic Warfare against "Progressive" Governments?: Latin America Food Waste Could Feed Over Third of World Hungry

The food wasted in Latin America could feed more than 37 percent of the global population suffering from hunger, representing 300 million people, said the Food and Agriculture Organization Wednesday.

Latin America loses up to 348,000 tons of food per day on average, a figure that should be cut by half in the next 14 years, warned the U.N. body, in a bid to meet the Sustainable Development Goals set up in September 2015.

According to the FAO, about 36 million people living in Latin America could cover their needs in calories with the food wasted in supermarkets, representing more than the total population of Peru, and more than the total of people suffering from hunger in the region.

However, the organization welcomed the recent policies aiming at reducing food waste, either individually or through regional bodies like the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
